Hi Alan,
If the car was an original automatic it would be a Borg Warner Model 8 box, there were no other variations used in the Mk10's because the Model 8 was a more robust version than the BW35 that was used in other Jag models at that time. The only other option was the manual 4 speed all-synchromesh gearbox with overdrive.
The earlier Mk10 3.8 had the Borg Warner DG auto trans.

Ernie,

According to my records - which is research from the Jaguar Heritage Museum Archives.

Exports to Canada 1st October 1968 - 30th September 1969

There were 4 - 420G & 1 420G Limo with BW & 1 car with overdrive.

I will let Charles advise where to look as he's had as many of these cars as I have fingers great

If your car is pre Oct '68 let me know and I will post the previous years export figures if you want them.

Hi Ernie,
Yes it is possible that you may Not have it I'm afraid. It was fitted to some manual cars as an Optional extra.
The Laycock de Normanville overdrive unit was housed in a casing at the rear of the gearbox.
It was operated by an electric solenoid controlled by a switch mounted on the steering column, well it was actually a lever of sorts in place of the automatic trans lever.
The overdrive could only be engaged when the car was in top gear, and the car was geared so that overdrive top is really a high fifth ratio.

Thought you might also like to know that Paul Roach Jaguar in Sudbury has fitted an XJ40 gearbox into a MK10/420G.

He's a very knowledgable and helpful chap; nice workshop as well. Smile
