OK, if there are crickets out there have them pipe down.

I first have to apologize as this question is not at all up to the standards of the old ones. But lets call it a "soft start" shall we?
Typically I spend quite a lot of time researching these things and lately I have jut not had that time. Hopefully things settle down a bit this coming weeks.
I will have to refresh my memory as to the way I did things and keep the standards up.

SO, here we go:

All of us with early MK 10's will be able to recognize a switch to the side of the steering wheel.
That is a hold switch for the transmission.
Can you tell me what year they were discontinued and also, what year did the shift pattern on the automatic transmission change?

This should b a very easy one.

Cheerio

I have never owned a Mk10 so a stab in tbe dark.

Did the switch get discontinued in '64 when the car changed from
the 3.8 to the 4.2 Question

Part 2 : no idea, I didn't know it had changed

as far as I am aware, the DG250, which was fitted to 3.8, has a different auto shifter gate position to the BW8 equipped 4.2MKX. So '65, or '66, depends how you interpret when an "car year" ends & begins

Hi All, clearly I am rather late for the answer but here it is:
Like a lot of things Jaguar the answer isn't so simple.
The Transmission on the early cars had a pattern of P-N-D-L-R. Meaning that you could not manually shift the car into second gear hence the need for the switch which held the car in second gear for the sake of passing, accelerating onto a motorway or climbing hills. When the transmissions were switched to a more conventional P-R-N-D-D2-L the switch became redundant.
You note that on the latest 420G there should be no switch.
When the transmissions were gradually replaced with conventional units the switches disappeared.
Manual transmission cars never had such a switch it was only the automatic cars.

The shift pattern indeed began to change in 1964 when the 42 engine replaced the 3.8, so cheers to CLive for that "stab".

Going forward I emphasize that my enthusiasm for this quiz thread has never waned, however my spare time has not been kind to me. I do wish to continue and I do wih to be more regular. In the mean time if you can keep your eyes opene, I will have another question very soon.

Cheers
Duane

Yes, I am thinking of this page actually. I was here recently and noted not much activity.
But, FB might be the answer. Not only to revive the Quiz but also maybe drive traffic here??
Let's give it a shot. I'll think of something to post today if I can.
