OK, lets try this again, and this time no Captchas!

We all know about the limousine version of the MK 10. We know that there were only 18 built.
However, like a lot of classics people want to replicate them.

Was there any replicas built of the Zenith Limo?

If there was where was it built?

What might be a difference from the originals?

Not too hard this one. With the miserable late start I will keep it going til the weekend.

So,,,,,,GO!

And the question had a Captch again, but it worked.....

I will try again.  How about one 1964 Mark 10 replica built in New Zealand?  And the difference between the original and the replica limousine might be the 21 inch longer wheelbase on the original.

PostSubject: Re: Duane's Classic Jaguar Quiz   Wed Mar 19, 2014 4:03 am

OK here it is for the Monday question posted on Tuesday which will be posted with a new question next Monday becoming once again the Monday Question:

The famous code names for Jaguar "XJ this" and "XJ that", but the only car without an XJ in its code was the Zenith? Fittingly enough the car that we first began to celebrate here with an exclusion of most all others. However the XJ numbering system never did make any sense with its random choice of monikers. The "XJ 5" project could just as easily be followed up with the "XJ 4" project which eventually went to market as the famous XJ 6. Then don't even get me started on that magnificent XJ 13! Followed up??? By an XJ 12 many years later?? Never mind its too confusing. Keep this up we will all need to  lay down for a bit.

So to get to the question, what was the XJ 16?

For a bonus question, what car was the only other Jaguar of the day
to have a code "name" rather than an XJ prefix?

Starter pistols softly heard in the background. High quality sound deadening material directly from Jaguar supplying the dignified silence...SHHH!! On your tip toes and GO!

OK - the XJ16 was the codename for the Jaguar 420 mid-sized saloon.

And around the same time, Bertone produced a prototype with the codename 'Pirana' (not spelt like the fish!!!).

Is the Pirana really a Jaguar prototype??? Discuss...............

And because I have to run I will post a quick answer:

The XJ 16 is indeed the uprated S-type come 420. Congrats Carl for getting that part of it close enough!

And the other car with a "Name" instead of a code was the "Utah" project which I will lazily let you read about yourself with a cut and paste and dash out the door to a meeting type of attitude

THE JAGUAR 420/Daimler Sovereign was the final variation of the original Utah project that evolved into the Mk1, Mk2 and S-type saloons. And if that story was not confusing enough the 420 had a similar moniker to the big 420G saloon, a revised MkX, which was announced at the same time. But to simplify matters for the layman, the Mk1 of 1955 was developed into the Mk2 of 1959, and this was further developed into the S-type of 1963 which had independent rear suspension, and was sold alongside the Mk2.

The Utah Mk3/XJ3 was announced on 30 September 1963 as the Jaguar S-type, although only 42 were manufactured that year. The new model was available with 3.4- and 3.8-litre XK engines in the same state of tune as the equivalent Mk2, combined with the choice of manual or automatic transmission.

PostSubject: Re: Duane's Classic Jaguar Quiz   Tue Mar 25, 2014 12:57 pm

Well good evening ladies and gentlemen.
As it is still Monday here in snow bound Toronto Canada I am on a deadline to meet my own commitment of a new question today, so here it is:

Our beloved XJ6 or to the knowledgeable geeks among us the XJ 4. The charming first of the long running "XJ" line that remains with us today. Lovely as it was it took a while for it to bully the others in its way, out of its way. I am talking about all its Jaguar stablemates that needed to move over and make room for the new king. It is so well known that the XJ 6 replaced all other Jaguar models and that by 1971 there were in effect only two Jaguar cars to choose from, the XJ 6 and the E-Type. Quite a feat indeed to say that the humble XJ4 that might never have been, was indeed that good.

First I would ask the question, which model was first to go, and which was the last?

That is but part one and by far the easy question. You may not know that in the history of our favourite car company the accepted stories have sometimes been lets say, the glossy versions.
During the desperate run to get the fabulous XJ to market there were numerous pitfalls among them were labour unrest and strikes, problems with "pressed Steel" who returned the XJ 6 to the drawing board for engineering defects, and there was also a very problematic arrest of a prominent Jaguar Executive during this time that exacerbated the delay as he was considered to be a valued man in the organization and he was subsequently very hard to replace. His arrest left a vacuum in the organization that was as difficult a hurdle to overcome as were all the other issues.

Who was this man and what problems did his arrest provide the Jaguar car company?

I should say that this may be the toughest question yet, but the most fun to research.

So to reiterate:

which model was first to go, and which was the last?

Who was this man and what problems did his arrest provide the Jaguar car company?

They are off!
(To the Jaguar Library I suppose)

Cheers to all and good luck!

See you by Friday with the answers one way or the other.

DG
