I'm stumped. I looked on line and found where the Kennedy's drove a white 1957 Mark I that belonged to Jackie Kennedy' step father whenever they visited the family, but couldn't find any reference to John Kennedy actually owning a Jaguar himself. I can't wait to find out the answer to this puzzler!

Barbara, you are onto something. Stay away from the ebay auction info.

Well Barbara, You actually have it. When you go to the Ebay info it seems to have a skeptical and cautious approach to the Kennedy connection. When I posted the question I had information that stated Jackies Step father had given the car to John as a gift. Due to the frequent visits and Johns active career there wasnt much point in moving the car from the Virginia estate so there it stayed.
It was a 3.4 MK 1 Here is the wording of it.

A very special item has just been listed on eBay — a 1957 Jaguar Other Mark 1 that was once owned by JFK. In pristine condition with all the original bells and whistles, the car had been a gift from Jackie Kennedy’s mother’s second husband (so kind of like JFK’s father-in-law).

So Barbara I am giving it to you once again. This is the car that was apparently given to John Kennedy and the answer to the question.

Now, Monday...what shall it be on Monday?

AHA! Heres a stumper for you.
You will hate me for this one.

As we all (should) know, the E-Type was preceded by the D-Type, which was preceded by the C-Type.
The E type was a crucial car to the MK 10 because it was released at the same time and it shared what would be essentially the same engine and suspension. No to forget the side tracking that was done with the famous XK-SS which was really a ruse by Jaguar to sell the old stock D-types with the added bonus of having a car that could......??

OK, we all think we know this so here it is, how many XK-SS cars were turned out of the Jaguar factory. Meaning counted as original XK-SS cars?

What was the added bonus the the XK-SS would allow for a fresh career for the re dressed D-Types?

Get your bricks and tomatoes ready....GO!

Only 16 cars left the factory, before the rest and the jigs were destroyed by the fire.

Will get my thinking cap on for part 2.........................

The fresh career for the XK-SS was as a race car for certain events within the US.

Or something along those lines.....

PS - there were also (I think) 2 or 3 extra cars over the 16 XK-SS that were produced for the road from previously raced D Types.

Oh Carl...You do have a thinking cap.

I will give it to you first prize!  Cheers

And now to make the fine points clear.

OK, common knowledge is that there were were  16 XK SS cars that left that factory and this is not wrong as the fire ruined the plans for the factory to rid themselves of old D-Type stock that was no longer competitive. However in 1958 two privately owned D-Types were returned to the factory for conversion and this brings the total to 18 cars. Interesting side note is that one of the later cars converted from 1958 is the car that American fashion designer Ralph Lauren later came to own.

And the conversion of the ageing D-Types gave it a new career in group C racing, or that was the plan anyway.
Which I like as it makes me think of the C (competition) type that started it all.

OK, So Carl, Ive decided that the prize this week is a week in Las Vegas beginning tomorrow off you go.  lol!

Cheers! And I will see you all here on Monday!

Duane

I guess I am pretty lucky - however the E-type is my husband's. It's been in the shop for almost two years and the restoration is almost complete. He changed the color from Regency Red to Black so they had to disassemble it, we rechromed almost everything, had the interior redone, replaced all the seals, installed a new windshield, and added a/c to the car. We were assured it would be done by the end of Feb, but the shop called yesterday and said it was 97 percent finished. I wonder how long the remaining 3 percent will take???? We just want to drive it - I guess I wasn't blessed with patience......

Well Carl, considering the fact it took me decades for the Zenith stars to line up, someone somewhere should consider a fair trade eh?

Wouldn't you have fun driving a car in England with wrong side steering!

Barbara, I think the USA was by percentage compared to import numbers, least appreciative of Zeniths. Lots for sale lately but not too many that are well kept and loved. So if you LOVE your cars...well you know. My daughter works in California sometimes. She sends me pics of Old jags by text. If I get a Zenith on radar I will ask you for identity.

Duane - As for driving a left-hooker on the 'wrong' side of the road, I already have this dubious pleasure.

Let me introduce my wifes Renault Twingo 1 - never imported into the UK, but an absolute HOOT to drive!!!

And seeing as we want to retire to France in 10 years time, acquiring a LHD Zenith wouldnt be beyond the realms of possibility...... But importing one from the US personally might be financial suicide. I will leave that to the pros.

Anything I can do to help Duane.  We spend about half our time in California, the other half in Arizona.  The Zeniths haven't been popular in the US in the past, and while I have usually had the only one at some of the smaller shows, I've seen two or three lately so I think they are starting to appeal to more people.   I love em!  So rich and regal, with all the room, leather, and wood.

And I know what you mean about driving on the wrong side of the road, Carl.  My 420G is RHD - makes driving alot more interesting!   lol!

Yup to all. "Spotted" is a GREAT idea. (Spotted dick?) I will give you pics of a 63 that was in a wreckers yard.
Terrible tragedy.

Our Daimler is a right drive car and lots of fun to drive in traffic but only with the hood down.
That letter slot rear window is suicide in traffic with that massive blind spot.
I originally wanted a right drive Zenith. But there was so much overpriced junk around.
Once a year you might find one for sale and they were all so badly done in.

Anyway Clive, maybe we can trade off. One right drive for one left drive?
Split the costs of transport its all done.  Smile
Now if I could talk my wife into that deal,,,,,what with it being our wedding car and all..

Well I will move things off the table to get ready for Monday...Scuse me for a bit.

Cheers!

BTW Clive, I love the Twingo. There are so many European cars that most in North America never see.
I have traveled quite a bit so I see more than average but this little fellow does seem to be fun just to look at as most French cars are. Have I ever mentioned that Bonnie and I are members of the Citroen Club? Want a good "DS" or a "Traction".

OK, I have to get down to business here so back to it.

Cheers!!

Folks, as Monday draws near a close I find that the weekly question is rather elusive.
Therefore I shall keep working and I will find a question that is hopefully not so obtuse as to warrant critical head scratching, not simple enough that your teenager could answer from common knowledge.

As usual when doing research I am astonished at the misinformation out there about Jaguar cars.
Nothing ever made has it seems, more silliness claimed on its behalf as does Jaguar.
Causing me distress as I correct via the "comments" sections of web pages.

OK then. Off I go back to work on the grand question.

I have a question ready, but I was met with a "Captcha" that wouldn't allow for the full number shown to be entered. I lost my question on hitting the back button. I had no choice but to hit it as I was stuck in a no mans land.
Aggravating and if this posts I will be doubly aggravated.
