I love Jaguars.
I love looking at Jaguars.
I love driving Jaguars.
I love everything about Jaguars.
But I'm no mechanic which is why it costs me a small fortune to pay others to take care of those areas for me on my cars.
I wish I was, but I'm not.
So on any mechanical questions I will gladly pass and await the response of those more au fait with these thing Very Happy

OK so Jaguar has recently released a four cylinder version of the iconic modern sedans. (If you can say "iconic" and "Modern" in the same sentence that is)

Those of us with a long memory or without the years to match that memory maybe with a knowledge of Jaguar history, will remember a bygone era when Jaguar offered a six cylinder version as a top model and a four cylinder as a base.
This of course go's back to the SS-Jaguar days.
While essentially the same cars there was a physical difference between the cars that could be seen from the front and from the profile giving the cars a distinction one from another.

What was the biggest physical difference between the four cylinder cars and the six cylinder cars?

One..... two.... three..... GO!

Damn no action!?

The answer I was looking for was found in the size and height of the headlamps.
The four cylinder cars had the lower profile lamps.
Pretty obscure I know but I was in a pinch over other things and that happens to be one of my favourite trivial bits about those SS saloons.

Anyway tell me, have I gotten too esoteric here?
Shall I have to re think the questions to make them more relevant?
Or is this just a natural lull in things?
I may tend to believe that as the other Jaguar website has had very little action of late as well.

So if I still hear crickets I will assume the latter and post another question over the weekend.

Cheers!
Oh and one more for the home team!

Gent's:

I do so hate to be a pain in the irs here, but I think I have another really good trivia quiz for you.
Now do trust me here as I assure you that my aim is not to keep on winning these things but...well...this is almost as good as "Sea Type" was.

So here go's:

In the very late 1950's Jaguar was preparing for what would be the iconic E-type.
In the course of its production prototypes were made and E1A was one as was E2A.
These were important cars that gave us much of what the E-type would be.

OK Here are the questions!!!! bounce

E2A exists today because of a relatively junior employee who used his powers of persuasion to encourage the top brass to buy the car and keep it for posterity.

(tada tdada drum roll here) What was his name?

Clue: a woman named "Penny" had the same last name and owned a lightweight coupe which she used in competition. Can't remember what but she used it well and may still own the car.

For a bonus question:
What became of E1A?

Gents:

My recent disappearance as sudden as it has been was due to sudden chest pains worsening over time due to a faulty heart valve. As of about April 2nd I have been out of sorts a bit.

I am OK now and stabilized but very sober for the experience.
Now then I add yet another Doctor to my Rolodex and press on.

Sorry about that but it was rather distracting I must say.
Funniest thing is, I have forgotten the answer to my own question LOL.

Oh well that is distraction for you.
I shall answer this question in the next day and try to get this thing back on track.

OK Gent's
(Are there ANY ladies among us??)

Just to try to get things back on track here FINALLY, I will spill the beans on the answers to the questions.

Answers:

Roger Woodley was the manager who engineered the sale from Jaguar to a private individual named Guy Griffiths when the car was scheduled to be crushed. Effectively saving the car from the same fate as E1A.

The answer to the bonus question, E1A was broken up in '59 or '60 and was only seen and driven by a lucky few.

Oh yes, and every one loves a love story,
That owner of the lightweight coupe named Penny?
Well she was Penny Griffiths daughter of Guy Griffiths,
who later became
Penny Griffiths-Woodley. So she indeed had the same last name...as both men in the story. So, now you know the rest of the story.

Duane.

Look for another astonishing question to be announced in the next day or so.
Please let me know if these questions are too obtuse, or esoteric, or pic your own descriptive term if you wish.

All of the boards I am on are quiet right now and car season is coming, so I will keep this up as long as there is even a hint of interest.

Cheers!

NEW QUESTION!!!

Every Jaguarphile knows that the revolutionary independent rear suspension of the E-Type and the MK 10 was light years ahead of it's time in the day. When even Enzo was well behind Jaguar with his developments and his 250 GT's still on drum brakes no less!

So then how good was it?
What year did the original IRS finally end its production in it's essentially original format?

And what well known car company (an example owned by at least one Royal)
Took the IRS as it's own keeping it past Jaguar's sell by date?

Clue...they also borrowed the essentials of one engine.

(Bonus applause for a specific model)

There you go! We are off to the hunt again!!

I will give it to Ernest, and a close second to Clive for the inclusion of photo's.
The specific engine wasn't part of the question but the Aston Martin cars used that same suspension until the late '90's and it has been argued that Aston borrowed the Jag V12 in its essence for the use of the Aston V12 cars.
And I have always been suspicious of the Aston six, even though "experts" claim it to be very fragile when compared to the Jag motor and thus inspiring at least a few transplants of Jag XK engines into Astons....but maybe no one is actually allowed to say any of this?? The Aston people may come to get us?

Not sure how heavily I want to weigh in on that engine stuff though.
This is ALL in good sport anyway and a clue is a clue.

Congrats to Ernest, and Clive gets a ....half point? Or ???

OK I have another one in the next few days.

Cheers
~Duane

Glad for the encouragement thank you for that.
I am thinking of three different questions...wondering if it is time to involve the cousin by marriage to the Jaguar family.

That's all for now.

Give me four hours from this posting and I will have made a decision.

Jaguar has alwasy known what side it bread was buttered on, As a result marketing was focused very well in countries where Jaguar did business and focused on the models that sold well in different places.

What did the yank's want in the fifties?

A certain popular automotive magazine was launched in 1950.
They are still around today and for its first ten years Jaguar dominated this magazines back cover with its constant adverts, this international magazine was the target of the "Lyons share" of American Jaguar ads.

Name that magazine----GO!

Hint, there are only three that may qualify here.

Just V12, hope you’re well on the road to recovery now from your heart scare, glad you’re well.

Thank you for the input with the quiz, it makes the site interesting, it’s an easy cop out just to sit back and read what someone else has put in, ( hint, hint to others! ) so thank you!

Right then...having said my platitudes and woken the lot up at the back of the class… Laughing Time for a bit of leg pull….

Clive….c’mon! That engine in the Aston is nothing like your 420G and you should know having just spent gazillions of pounds getting it sorted and resplendent with its gold topped head. - look where the distributor is sitting on the one in the photo!

The engine in the DB5 (red)/ DB6 (silver) was designed by Tadek Marek and is a twin overhead cam, 3.7 litre, straight six engine that went on to become a 4.0 litre.

Now then, the suspension… no, no, no! Mr Carnut. He say’s firmly peering from behind his Observers Book of Automobiles dated 1996…. study

Ernest is correct it was the XJS in 1996 that last used the IRS albeit with outboard discs to aide cooling although it added to sprung weight.

Interesting Wiki link here for the aficionados of rear suspension- gulp!

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

What else? - Oh yes...engine Rolling Eyes

The Jaguar XJ41/2 was the development of the sports range of the XJ40 and intended to replace the XJS. Time, money, mismanagement and politics finally killed an over run and out of scope project and Ford Motor Co who by then had bought Jaguar cancelled the project and passed the engineering remains across to that most honourable of gentlemen (cough cough) Mr TWR to develop into the Aston DB7.

The engine wasn’t the AJ6 but rather the AJ16 with a supercharger and the rest is history.

As ever Keith Adams ARonline.co.uk tells a fascinating story and this is augmented by Car Magazine contributor Goatboy who seems to have an insight that has eluded others….. Interesting indeed- thinks… either way fabulous story here:-
