I would like to know what sort of wheels you have on your cars. Whilst I understand that our cars came out originally with 14" steel rims, I have heard of owners upgrading to 15" without any complications, furthermore I have even seen 420G's sporting XJ series 2 chrome wheels.
I would appreciate your input outlining your experiences, pros and cons etc. At the present time I am trying to source some 14" standard rims for my car in Australia, maybe I should be looking for something else I dont know

Hi Charles

My original 14 inch wheels had somewhat rusty chrome rings and bad tyres, so I decided to change to 15 inch wheels, as I had a set of alloys handy, and also was able to obtain a set of 15" S1 steel wheels with S3 dress trims for next to nothing. ( see pics on my thread)

The alloys are the gold lattice type, I have seen them on Jags b4, they looked good.

I fitted the others, as the SS and chrome trim, was very shiny Smile and I think the 420G can stand a fair bit of bling

Good luck finding decent S2 chrome wheels, they would look very good if you can imo

btw, make sure you get appropriate wheel nuts, as they can be different, also I think the "backspacing" could be an issue with some wheels, alloys in particular

All in all, I would say, that even though the 14" wheel does add something "special" to the appearance of the 420G, the 15" wheel looks slightly better.

The cars are just so large for such a small wheel

What do you think of the look and practicality of the whire wheel examples?

Tony
Thanks for that, I agree that 15" wheels from say a series 1 XJ would suit nicely and I could have gone that way but my 14" tyres (whitewalls) were just to good to dispose of so I'm sticking with the 14"s for the time being
In regards to wire wheels, It's a matter of personal taste. I personally think that they belong on sports coupes and not on huge saloons. One example is Micah's car on JL. It is a fabulous MK10 he restored from the ground up over many years, it has the wire wheels and looks stunning but to me it's NQR with them on.
I'm sort of leaning toward the --If man was meant to fly, God would have given him wings ---way of thinking with this, so I think I am going to stick with the look of the 14's with the correct chrome cap and trims.

Could anybody with original steel wheels on their car tell me whether the wheel nuts fasten all the way down to the hex part on the actual nut or is there a dome part on the nut top that holds the wheel in situ??

Charles,

On mine the original nuts are same as S1 XJ, ( i think)

in that there is an identical taper on each end, that mates with the taper in the wheel

No domes anywhere, plain steel, drilled and threaded all the way thru

does that answer your question?

Yes, Thanks Tony,
However I was wanting to know whether the taper on the wheel nut was so small that the top of the hex sides of the nut actually make contact with the taper in the wheel as mine do, which i find odd. maybe they are all like that.
I'm going to go to one of the wreckers here with one of my wheel nuts as a sample to see what they say. I dont know

You are certainly putting attention to detail now for
this concours show now Exclamation

While on the subject of wheels I read that MK10 & 420G
have different hubcaps do you have the right ones Question

Again, if anyone can upload a picture of the 2 versions
that would be good Smile

Yes, Clive you are correct,
The hubcaps on the Mk10's were the conventional type with the word Jaguar across the center.
The 420g had the Jaguar face round badge.

Hi Jag420G- if my memory serves me correctly there is very definately a male/female taper to the wheel nuts and not a flat face mating.

Well people, my original wheels are finally on. They were sourced, sandblasted and then powder coated.

I went from these deep dish bad boys (I dunno what the PO was thinking)

To this glorious result:

Thanks to all for your assistance highfive

CHARLES thanks3

Charles,

FWIW, Holden HQ - HZ 14" have the same stud pattern.
When I bought my Jaguar it wad reversed Holden rims on it and looked dreadfull.

Thanfully, Bob Jane imported 14" Dunlop Wire Wheels for the HJ Statesman's in 1975-76.

They are the wire wheels on my Jaguar party

Those wheels also tend to snap spokes, which is a worry, as those spokes are like Hens Teeth in AU!
The other day, a young chap was selling 5 Dunlop Wires, the lot for $120!
Naturally, I bought them. Bit of rust on some but it will be hard to see on the back great

Oddly enough, I have Falcon XW wheels on the 1958 Arrow caravan, and would you believe, the Jaguar 420G hub caps actually fit XY-XW wheels! Great match.

Cheers,
Ron

The problem with this type of wheel nut is it is hard to define how much wear has taken place to the taper either on the wheel or nut , I would use the rule of thumb that if the hex is below the face of the wheel then something needs changing .
