Apparently it was offered as an option at the showroom back in the 60's.
it straddles the center console and doubles as an armrest as well as a storage box.

Clive, you do realise that "Henley" refers to the Henley Motor Group don't you? as an approved accessory and not to Henley On Thames, albeit the HMG name may be based on the aforementioned town.

Hi Guys
Re: Henley's
Off the top of my head, Henley's was founded by Bertie Henley after WW1, and he set the Swallow Side Car company and William's Lyons and Walmsley onto the road to success when he ordered an unpresidented 500 Swallow bodied Austin 7s after he saw a prototype at either Earls Court or Olympia motor show in the early mid 20s.
'
By the way the 'before' pic of my 'Blue Whale being used as the current header makes it look so good, I am questioning why I have just gone through the whole refurb. process! Rolling Eyes

Best to all

Just regarding these console armrest storage options.

I did not notice this thread initially, but only found out about them recently.

For such a big car, they are woefully short of useable internal storage, the front parcel shelf functioning more as a centrifuge than storage, your items inevitably rolling around the passenger footwell, and needing arms like an orangutan to retrieve them.

the prospect of finding an original Zenith item would be like rocking-horse manure imo

so that leave re-manafacture.

It would seem that a UK producer MAY be able to do them, but freight would be high, his prices are not low either.

have now obtained detailed pics and diagrams of the mk2 item.
these are courtesy of Bob M from the Jag-Lovers website

I can see no reason why a very close replica of the original cannot be constructed.
So close that it would be indistiguishible

The timber box would be childs play for any handyman

The upholstery is more complex, but should be achievable by the amateur with handtools only,
and if you have red or grey interior like mine, could easily be matched to a grained vinyl. (much cheaper than leather)

I happen to have a spare S2 XJ console and they have built in armrest/storage/lid

The insides of this are very nice indeed, and I will use some of that, if it fits, which it almost certainly will (hinges, lid, tray etc)

dimensions of mk2 item

The method of attachment at the base for MK2 is clearly different

studying these pics, I see an anomaly though

The Zenith item, shown in 2 pics of the promotional literature, you can see what appears to be a "base" piece, that most likely attaches to the 2 knurled screws that hold the console. zoom into that and the last of Carsies pics...the base on that seems to be curved up, toward the front of the seat, wheras the promotional pic the base seems to extend down on all sides with no curvature visible.

How to make sure the whole contraption is mounted in a stable way needs to be established
I speculate this is vinyl covered sheetmetal.

* we crossed posts Charles, I agree as you can see from the extra bit I added.
Have posted a direct plea on J-L as well.

Using the photos and a vernier, reckon I can establish the correct dimensions to close tolerance.

At any rate, so long as it fits right in its spot, no-one will ever know.
fwiw, using this method, I estimate the zenith unit is 6" tall, against the 5" for mk2.

I have made copies of original items that could not be obtained before, including upholstery.
People would say, "where did you get that"...when I said I made it, sometimes that would even get a bit funny, like I had cheated on them or something Laughing

Tony,
Thanks for tackling the issues associated with this much sought after item. The MK2 item is very attractive and a nice starting point however it needs to be stated that the MK10 box appears to be much more prestigious, wider and with rounded corners.
Furthermore its fixing points appear to be more complex. It would be a huge bonus if someone out there actually had one to submit vital statistics from.
In any event kudos to you for being pro active regarding this.
I await eagerly for the next instalment.

Good for you Clive,
Over a year ago I approached that chap from "jaguararmrest. Com". Who does them for MK 2's. Sent him all the brochure pics and also Carsie's pics etc. upon receiving those he invited me to come and see him so we could begin proceedings.
I then told him that I was in Australia and that's when all communication stopped. He must still think that we are a convict colony or something Twisted Evil
In any even I'm glad that you are still there keeping the home fires burning for the team.
If anyone can get it done its you! great
Best regards
